In this episode of the Data and AI Gist Podcast, host, Philip Ade-Akanbi chats with Esther Anagu; Senior Data Scientist at Wema Bank.
Esther (fondly called the celebrity) has worked as a data scientist in the banking industry for over three years where she has helped her organization make informed decisions, better understand customer behavior, and drive strategies for better results.
Outside of her 9-to-5 job at Wema Bank, she shares resources, teaches data skills, and helps those interested in breaking into the data world.
Key Takeaways from this episode:
* AI's Role: AI supports professionals by automating repetitive tasks, not replacing jobs.
* Continuous learning is essential for relevance.
* Data Scientist vs. Data Analyst: Analysts interpret past data while scientists perform advanced work, predicting future possibilities
* Data Science Project Lifecycle: a) understand the business problem, b) gather data, c) clean the data (80% of the project), d) explore data, e) build and evaluate the model, f) communicate non-technical results, g) monitor value, and h) continuously engage stakeholders.
Esther also shared her journey from an Accounting graduate who discovered her interest in data through statistical tools in her final project. She learned data analysis, Machine Learning (ML), and deep learning starting in 2020 via a Women Techsters program, leading to her current role after an internship.
Esther's advice for aspiring professionals are Practice, Build a portfolio, Find a mentor/community, and Share your work.
Learn from Esther's Mistakes by not Neglecting stakeholder interaction before modeling, don't focus only on technical skills but also on data storytelling/non-technical communication, and ensure the data you work with is clean.
