Tuesday Nov 09, 2021
On January 23, 2020, the World Health Organization’s International Health Regulations (IHR) Emergency Committee advised that “all countries should be prepared for containment, including active surveillance, early detection, isolation and case management, contact tracing and prevention of onward spread of 2019-nCoV infection, and to share full data with WHO”. On January 30, 2020, the WHO declared COVID-19 to be a public health emergency of international concern.

Despite these numbers, it is stunning to know that many Africans do not know that this open and free platform exists and even a lesser number of people know that they can actively rewrite the stories of and about Africa by actively collaborating with other Africans to factcheck the stories shared about us and make sure these stories share the right stories from the right perspectives.
In this episode, the Communications Lead for the 2021 WikiIndaba Conference, Geoffrey Kattarega, discusses these issues with the aim of raising awareness about the issues, concerns and importance of this conference to Africa.

Wikiindaba: Why Africans Should Tell Their Stories
Thursday Nov 04, 2021
Thursday Nov 04, 2021
When people say “just Google it”, most times they mean “just Wiki it”. Because, when you google it, (whatever it is), you’ll get the closest, seemingly clearest and most diverse answer or resource from the Wikipedia page.
Wikipedia, one of the world’s most widely used reference compendium, is one of the few spaces where Africans can directly write and edit their stories.
This is the reason all Africans should be involved in telling their stories because stories have been used to dispossess and to malign, but stories can also be used to empower and to humanize. Stories can break the dignity of a people, but stories can also repair that broken dignity.
In the wake of the 2021 WikiIndaba Conference, the incoming CEO of Wikimedia Foundation, the global nonprofit organization that supports Wikipedia and 12 other free knowledge projects,, Maryana Iskander, discusses why Africans should tell their stories.
